Flammulina filiformis or F. velutipes. Fruiting abundantly on a fallen Alnus rubra over a small creek at Doty Hills wilderness area. I Encountered them while leading a small foray with new friends Jon and Whitney at Doty Hills. They taught Boyd, Lara and myself about augite/rock hounding and I, in return taught them fungal ecology/taxonomy. I led Jon down to this Alnus rubra dominant creek area to collect Pleurotus pulmonarius on the same host log while Lara, Whitney and Boyd waited near the vehicles up the road(loads of devils club and stinging nettle in a steep downward deer trail to this spot). I readily identified this collection as Flammulina cf velutipes by the tacky brown cap, pale bluntly notched gills, thick densely suede velvet exannulate stipe and occurrence on Alder(and other hardwoods) being common. I taught him that prefix "velute" meaning velvety/hairy/tomentose and "ipes" meaning in reference to stipe=velvety stipe for velutipes. This one may turn out to be filiformis or undescribed, but the historically common taxonomic species group of velutipes was taxonomically descriptive in this instance. I shot all field photos and a short video of this collection with my iPhone11 Pro Max and then harvested 3 specimens in my tacklebox for the trip home to Olympia. Once home, I prepared the collection on my dated workup sheet and then dehydrated them overnight in my dehydrator. I then bagged all specimens in a labeled ziplock for my home fungal herbarium/genetic record. I shot all field photos, video and home workup shots of this collection with my iPhone11 Pro Max(as I have done with every single fungal fruiting I have encountered since getting the phone in June of 2020).
